This week is Refugee Week which takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on the 20 June. In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities. Here in Wallsend we have a wonderful charity called Walking With in North Tyneside, which was set up around 15 years ago by Wallsend Churches Together to provided asylum seekers and refugees with all manner of support. Please visit the Walking With website and watch the short video to learn more about their work. The project, based at St Luke’s Church, Frank Street, Wallsend, is open for donated food on Mondays or Wednesdays, 10am-3pm. Preferred items are tins of tomatoes, chickpeas, sweetcorn, kidney beans, fruit, meat (but not pork), fish, packets of rice, spaghetti, cereal, tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits, chocolate and cooking oil, plus sundries such as: toilet rolls, shower gel, shampoo, soap powder. If you would like to contribute, we will ensure that any donations brought into school are delivered directly to the charity.
This year in addition to selling poppies for the Royal British Legion we have also been given a number of other items which our pupils might like to purchase.
Please join us in supporting this charity.
